CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A 25-year-old Sikeston man was found guilty of first-degree murder on Monday for the death of Keon Cooper in Carbondale from November of 2019.
Jackson County State's Attorney Joseph Cervantez announced Tyren Jawan Johnson, 25, was found guilty on Monday in the jury trial in Jackson County for the murder of Keon Cooper on November 3, 2019.
Carbondale police responded to the 500-block of South Illinois Avenue for a shots fired call. Keon Cooper was taken to the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale where he was pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds.
Police identified two people as suspects in the case, Tyren Johnson, then 21-years-old, and Olando Sheron, then 24-years-old. Both were from Sikeston.
On November 7, 2019, Johnson was arrested by the Sikeston Department of Public Safety.
Sheron was arrested after a car chase two years later in Gardena, California. He was charged and found guilty of murder on December 9, 2022, in Jackson County.
After Johnson was found guilty of murder on Monday, Cervantez said he could face between 45 years and natural life in the Illinois Department of Corrections for Cooper's murder.
The case was investigated by the Carbondale Police Department, with the assistance of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois University Department of Public Safety, Sikeston DPS and US Marshal's Service.
