ENERGY, Ill. (WSIL)-- A Williamson County couple is working to figure out their next move. Fire officials say this home is a total loss after a fire on February 28th, leaving the homeowner, Wesley Humphrey, wondering what could have caused it.
“It was a kind of a blur of a day, to be honest, Humphrey said.
He’s thankful no one was home during the fire. He says he was in disbelief when he heard about it.
“It felt like a million miles between Carbondale and here to get back to the house. And then I saw the smoke, and then it just kind of all hit me at once, Humphrey said.
Humphrey is still processing the emotions that come with losing a home.
“It's very surreal at this point. Still, it doesn't feel real like at all, Humphrey said.
Humphrey and his partner spent Tuesday morning going through what was left of their things. They also talked with fire inspectors and their insurance.
“It's pretty much a total loss, unfortunately. I mean, there's a couple of things that we've been able to salvage. We had a lot of friends here yesterday or the day before yesterday, and they helped get what we could salvage, Humphrey said.
Humphrey says he's thankful his family and friends have shown up to help in their time of need.
“My family and my friends, you know, they're my rock, Humphrey said.
He says because he works as a local realtor, the real estate community has also helped him find resources.
“The real estate community has really rallied behind me and helped me, Humphrey said.
Humphrey says they were able to salvage a few things that are important to them.
“My main thing was just to make sure that nobody was hurt and everybody was okay. And, you know, material things can be replaced of course, Humphrey said.
Humphrey says while they are still dealing with the emotions of losing their home, they are waiting to see from their insurance about what they will do next.
Fire officials say the fire is under investigation. Humphrey’s family member has also created a to help his family.
