WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. -- Williamson County officials located a stolen ATV involved in an attempted child abduction crime.

The ATV was the mode of transportation for the suspect in the case, Ricky A. Cooper. Deputies reported coming across Cooper breaking traffic laws on the ATV on Tuesday with a child in his lap. The Williamson County Sheriff's Office reported on the case on Thursday and said the child was returned to his legal guardians. The ATV, however, remained missing at the time of Cooper's arrest.

Officials say Cooper informed deputies he left the ATV in the woods upon his arrest. Deputies fought through wooden terrain overnight Tuesday to try to find the vehicle. Rain storms eventually put an end to their search.

Once the sun rose on Wednesday and the rain stopped, the deputies told a K9-unit-in-training overtook the search. The trainees reported searching a couple hundred acres of the woods but eventually discovered the missing vehicle.

“The commitment of our Deputies to locate this ATV reflects the overall drive each member of the Sheriff’s Office has for our community," said Sheriff Jeff Diederich. "The victim of this ATV theft deserved to have the property they worked hard for returned and that is exactly what occurred.

Officials did not give an update on Cooper's trial at this time.
