Carmi-White County High School Volleyball Prepares for First State Semifinal

CARMI, Ill. -- For the first time in school history, the Carmi-White County High School volleyball team is headed to the state tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs' season of firsts began last week when the team won its first Sectional Championship in school history over top-seed Fairfield in three sets.

Then, they took down St. Thomas More in the Super-Sectional in another close three-game match.

For the first time in school history, the Carmi-White County High School volleyball team is headed to the state tournament.

No. 2 CWCHS is headed to Normal, Ill. for the state semifinal game against fellow two-seed, and volleyball powerhouse; Elmhurst Immaculate Conception Catholic, who finished second in last year's 2A State Championship.

But the Bulldogs are not ready for their Cinderella season to come to an end just yet. The team has been working hard at practice this week preparing for their match with the Knights.

News 3 caught up with a few Lady Bulldog players at practice, who shared what their team needs to do to advance to Saturday's State Championship match.

"We all have to stay together, and we all have to keep each other picked up, but rankings at this point don't matter. We're the four-best teams in 2A, we made it there. We're playing against 15,16.17-year-old girls, and they have the same mentality we do, I mean, if you get in their heads, it's hard to come back from that and as a team, that's one of our biggest strengths is we don't get down," said Sophomore outside hitter, Caroline Simmons.

Junior setter Lauren Burzynski added, "we just, we need to work around their big blocks, they are very tall, and our defense needs to be on-point and I just think we just have to play an all-around really great game."

Head coach Chris Lucas says the team will leave for Normal early Thursday morning. Their Class 2A State Semifinal game against IC Catholic is set for 12 p.m. on Friday.
