Evansville fires McCarty, names new coach

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WSIL) -- The University of Evansville has fired head men's basketball coach Walter McCarty.

The university cited “behavior contrary to the core values of our University and an investigation into alleged sexual misconduct and alleged Title IX violations.

An investigation into those allegations, and McCarty was placed on administrative leave.

In a statement, the University of Evansville said:

While the investigation of potential Title IX violations will continue under University policies, UE has decided that, based on the facts uncovered thus far, it is necessary to terminate Mr. McCarty's employment immediately. There is no place at UE for any behavior by any University employee or student that jeopardizes the safety and security of others.

Jon Little, McCarty's attorney, argues there was no misconduct and the university made an "unfair rush to judgement."

UE previously told Coach McCarty and the Evansville community that an “independent investigation would be conducted and that any future decisions would be “fair and informed. Unfortunately, this did not happen.

The investigation was not independent - UE hired the same national law firm to conduct the investigation that it previously hired to draft the University policies now under review. UE then actively participated in the investigation and, prior to its conclusion, terminated Walter without him having an opportunity to defend himself in accordance with his contract or UE’s Title IX Policy.

The University has named Todd Lickliter as head coach. Lickliter inked a multi-year deal with the university and will assume the position immediately.

Lickliter was an assistant coach under McCarty during the 2018-2019 season before he resigned to recover from serious medical problems he suffered in an accident.

“I would like to thank President Christopher M. Pietruszkiewicz, Mark Spencer and the administration at the University of Evansville for the opportunity to coach these young men.  We will strive to uphold the Aces rich tradition and bring pride to the UE community.
