DU QUIN (WSIL) -- On Thursday, Du Quoin Girls Track and Field seeks another state title.
We go Beyond the Highlights with the Du Quoin Indians.
"The finish line is right there and we just got to get there and we can do it," Du Quoin Junior Lauren Heape said.
"I really think we can place in the top three, maybe even win it again because technically since we didn't have track last year, we've been the reigning champs the last two years so we've been lucky to hold onto that," Du Quoin Junior Olivia Phillips said.
A state title in 2019, potentially another in 2021. The Indians appear to be locked in.
"You know we've always been the underdogs in this," Du Quoin junior Grace Alongi said. "Even two years ago we were the underdogs so we are going to go into it like we go into every other meet with, we are just going to give it everything we got."
"2019 we worked our butts off, and it's 2021 nothing's changed, we are still working hard and we are going to go up there and give it all we got," Du Quoin senior Jaqueline Craine. "We are going to be competing against some tough teams, all those girls up north are really fast but we are Illinois and we are going to show them that we've got talent down here too."
It's a big moment to shine, but for seniors like Jaqueline Crain, she's going to relish the moment.
"I feel like I put a lot more pressure on myself just because I'm never going to compete like this ever again. I'm never going to be in this shape ever again and I;m never going to be with this team ever again so it's really bittersweet so I'm going to try and give it all I got and make sure it is one to remember."
Having success during the cross country season gives this group of indians a lot of confidence.
"It really keeps us motivated because we didn't get a state in cross country but now that we can get a state in track it means a lot to us," Alongi said.
Get used to seeing Du Quoin in this position on a yearly bases. I'm quickly learning they don't rebuild, they reload.
"The upper classmen I had at the time just really taught us what it means to be a team and to do it for each other."
"We have so much talent on this team and everywhere you look it's like we have people so if someone gets hurt in the mile we still have someone that can run the mile or the 400 or 800 and we just have an insane amount of strength and I'm very thankful for that," Phillips said.
