Goreville Baseball’s rally comes up short

CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- Goreville baseball did something remarkable on Monday night, unfortunately it did not translate into a win.

The Blackcats found themselves down 9-0 to South Central but instead of packing it in, Goreville showed fight at the Class 1A Super Sectional from Itchy Jones Stadium.

Blackcats trailed 6-0 in the 3rd inning, when Goreville Head Coach Shawn Tripp got ejected after he showed some displeasure with some of the calls.

Goreville scored 4 runs in the fifth inning, 4 more in the sixth and six in the seventh inning.

AJ Johnson led the rally, by just miss hitting for the single with ahomerun. Johnson singled, doubled and tripled on the afternoon while driving in 8 runs.

Johnson's triple came in the seventh and the Blackcats trailing 12-9. Johnson's hit cleared the bases and tied the game. Goreville went ahead when Rhett Schuetz shot the gap for two more runs, giving a 14-12 lead after being down 9-0.

South Central would tie it at 14 in the bottom of the seventh, so the game headed to extra innings. In the ninth, with bases loaded, South Central got ball four call to walk it off 15-14.
