MURPHYSBORO (WSIL) -- Murphysboro Football is gearing up for week one; the Red Devils face off against Herrin.

It's a young squad, roster loaded with sophomores who will need to make plays. Murphysboro Head Football Coach Gary Carter is confident with his 10 seniors. Carter is ready to get week one out of the way.

"You have to have a game , you got to get a game to get film, Carter said. "You can only do so much against yourself . We just need to line up against somebody else to evaluate the kids and what were doing and make adjustments for week two."

"All this work we have put in is actually going to something now instead of just being blown away," Murphysboro senior Gavin Kuba said. "That was a big worry for all the seniors on our team not being able to have this season."

"I've been waiting forever since fall got cancelled and I didn't know if we were gonna have a season, but I'm just glad were out here getting going again," Murphysboro senior defensive end Trenton Shepard said. "The energy here is just so awesome everyone here is just so excited. The coaches are fired up you can tell, its a long time waiting."

A lot of sophomores on the roster that are going to have to step up and make plays.

At the helm of the offense they'll have some experience in senior Ryan Finke at QB.

Head Coach Gary Carter said the emphasis right now is to keep getting better.

"I just think constant improvement," Carter said. "We got to have a passion for the game and continue to grow and get better week by week. These kids are doing that right now and our coaches have to do it as well. But I feel real good about where we are at."

"I think we're always ready," Murphysboro senior quarterback Ryan Finke said. "We practiced on and off since summer when we could. I really think we are ready for that first game, ready to work as a team together."
