A foul was called at the end of double overtime with no time left on the clock. A free throw sealed it for Mt. Vernon, winning 66-65.
MT. VERNON, Ill. (WSIL) -- It was a back and forth game which took extra time to declare a winner in Mt. Vernon on Tuesday night.
Mount Vernon faced off against Marion with a gymnasium full of fans.
With time winding down at end of regulation, Marion brought the ball down and attempted a 3. However, the ball bounced off the rim and both teams headed into overtime tied at 52.
Near the end of the first overtime, Marion again had a shot to win it. Marion had two chances at the rim, but the bucket didn't fall in. They then entered a second overtime tied at 60.
Near the end of the second overtime, there were 8 seconds left on the clock. A Mt. Vernon player drove towards the basket, put up a shot which missed. Upon grabbing the rebound, a referee blew the whistle which indicating a foul as time expired.聽
Mt. Vernon had a chance to win it at the line. Tied 65-65, senior guard Marlin Price shoots the free throw and makes it, giving Mt. Vernon the win 66-65 with no time left on the clock.聽
David Barnes with Mt. Vernon led all scores with 30 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.
Ethan Simmons led Marion with 25 points on seven made threes while Kaden Rogowski added 23 points for the Wildcats.
The two teams will match up again on February 21, in Marion.
