CARBONDALE —ÌýSIU Athletics Hall of Fame will grow by eight members with the class of 2019.Ìý The class includes a couple of former area standouts–baseball’s Jake Alley from Anna-Jonesboro and Sparta’s Kelly Gerlach Hovland from women’s golf.Ìý
Alley set the school record for career strikeouts and innings pitched as well as finishing ninth in wins.Ìý Gerlach was a four-time All-Conference performer.Ìý She set the school record for career rounds in the 70s and finished third all-time in stroke average.
The new class also includes former Saluki men’s basketball player and head coach Chris Lowery, who played on two NCAA tournament teams and coached in three more.
Also headed to the Hall, former Saluki running back Karlton Carpenter who owns the school’s all-time rushing record.Ìý Tim Kratochvil was one of the best catchers in Saluki baseball history.Ìý Craig Coffin is perhaps the best kicker in SIU history, as he holds both school and conference records.Ìý Wrestler Deke Edwards was 45-6 from 1958-61 despite the fact he was blinded a hunting accident when he was 11.Ìý Volleyball’s Deb Heyne Edwards led her teams in six statistical categories and finished her career third all-time in kills.
The induction ceremonies will be part of homecoming festivities October 18th and 19th.
