CARBONDALE (WSIL) The SIU women’s golf team will be heading to the state of Washington for the Cle Elum regional at Tumble Creek Golf Club.

It didn’t take long for the Salukis to find out where they’d be playing in regional action.

"Yea that was nice, at least we’re not just sitting there all tense, so it was exciting. Can’t wait," said SIU graduate student golfer Jackie Biggs.

"I was like shaking as I was sitting there, and I was like, ‘Okay when are they going to call our names? and then I saw the first sheet, and I was like, ‘Okay we’re not on there. And then my teammate pointed out that Northwestern was going, so I was like, ‘Oh maybe we have a chance and then the second page popped up and sure enough I saw our name, and I said, ‘We’re going to Washington," said SIU sophomore golfer Moyea Russell.

Along with the new scenery, the Dawgs are eager to face a tough field of opponents.

"Just it’s a different place all together. It’s going to be a different course, different teams, just traveling is always fun," said Biggs.

"There’s going to be a lot of good competition, but you know, we still have a lot of capabilities that we haven’t shined. Even at conference, we did well, but we still haven’t had our peak period, so maybe it’ll happen at regionals, and that’d be great, and we’ll see what we can do from there," said SIU head women’s golf coach Danielle Kaufman.

As the number eighteen seed, the Salukis will face quite a challenge in the regionals, an opportunity the team is looking forward to and beyond.

"It just shows that we have the talent, and I’m excited because I do have two more years, so we can improve off that, and I’m really excited about our freshmen class next year, because I think we can get it done again, and we’re just going to keep building on our talent," said Russell.

The Salukis hit the road to Washington for regionals next Friday, with action at Tumble Creek running May 6-8.
