Nick Hill sound on unsung heroes for WED 10 PM 4.28.21

CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- SIU is one of just 8 teams left vying for an FCS football national championship.

On Saturday, the Salukis made some big plays down the stretch.

Jerron Rollins, a transfer from Cincinatti had key catches, and Branson Combs, a redshirt freshman caught the winning touchdown.

I had several people tell me they had to look up these players.

Local guys like Nico Gualdoni from Johnston City, known for kicking field goals, made headlines for a touchdown pass and Chesters Jordan Berner made hits that made people stand up and cheer.

To Head Coach, Nick Hill, the Salukis I mentioned are not unsung heroes. They may not light up a stat sheet but they put in the work day in, day out.

"There's going to be some guys that are going to be the glue of your team that you have to have," Hill said. "It's rewarding to see them get some things, their hard work pay off and find moments like that. Branson is a freshman so he has a bright future around here. Jerron Rollins as a senior, 3 huge catches. He had the big catch against Northern Iowa and it was just big down the stretch. Berner, I don't think he's an unsung hero. I think if they are game planning us, 92 is an excellent player but yeah, Nico your kicker, all those guys, I'm happy for them and their success."
