Xavier Johnson makes history in SIU Hoops overtime loss to Drake

CARBONDALE, IL (WSIL) -  Saluki grad Xavier Johnson has elevated his game in college hoops all season long.

Even in losses, he never backs down from a challenge. The standout Saluki guard is number 2 in the nation in scoring with 24 points per game. On Wednesday night, Johnson scored 35 in the 4-point overtime loss to Drake.

Johnson made history in the tough loss. He put together another-30 point game. He scored 35 to be exact. This is notable as Johnson is now one of five players in Saluki history to score 30 points or more in at least six games.

Head coach Bryan Mullins says Johnson is a playmaker and expects him to come through with the game on the line.

So, where does Johnson rank among some of the Saluki legends?

He is tied for third with both Anthony Beane and current John A. Logan Athletic Director Greg Starrick with six games reaching 30 or more points.

Johnson trails only Steve Middleton with seven and Charlie Vaughan with 11.

Southern is back in home action on Saturday night at six. The Salukis welcome Illinois State for its annual Black Out Cancer game.
