...FLOOD WARNING NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 AM CDT MONDAY...

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues.

* WHERE...A portion of southern Illinois, including the following
counties, Franklin, Jefferson, Johnson, Perry, Pulaski, Union,
Wayne and Williamson.

* WHEN...Until 1000 AM CDT Monday.

* IMPACTS...Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying
and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Low-water
crossings are inundated with water and may not be passable.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- At 613 PM CDT, Even though the heavy rain has ended,
substantial flooding continues across much of the warned
area. Between 5 and 9 inches of rain have fallen since the
start of the event on Wednesday. Only light drizzle is
anticipated through this evening.
- Flooding impacts will continue, with only minimal additional
rainfall expected.
- Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Marion, Mount Vernon, Herrin, West Frankfort, Benton, Du
Quoin, Pinckneyville, Carterville, Fairfield, Anna, Johnston
City, Christopher, Jonesboro, Vienna, Rend Lake Area, Sesser,
Zeigler, Crainville, Cambria and Cobden.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded
roads. Find an alternate route.

...FREEZE WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM LATE MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH
TUESDAY MORNING...

* WHAT...Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 25 to 30 degrees
possible. Everyone should see a 32 degree low or close to it.

* WHERE...Portions of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western
Kentucky, and southeast Missouri.

* WHEN...From late Monday night through Tuesday morning.

* IMPACTS...Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other
sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor
plumbing.

.Heavy rainfall has ended across the area. The Big Muddy River is
continuing to rise and crests are expected over the next week.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Caution is urged when walking near riverbanks.

Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive
cars through flooded areas.

* WHERE...Big Muddy River near Plumfield.

* WHEN...Until further notice.

* IMPACTS...At 34.0 feet, Many surrounding homes begin to flood.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- At 11:00 AM CDT Sunday the stage was 23.9 feet.
- Forecast...The river is expected to rise to a crest of 32.4
feet Wednesday morning.
- Flood stage is 20.0 feet.

Native American petroglyphs return to southern Illinois

JACKSON COUNTY, ILLINOIS (WSIL) -- The Petroglyphs are being held in a safe location until going on display. But, their original site is about a mile away from the Paul Ice Recreational Area at Kinkaid Lake.

Mike Chervinko, a photographer and local history enthusiast, helped to bring the carvings back to the region.聽

"This area was heavily inhabited by our pre-historic ancestors," he explains. "So there are numerous camp sites, villages, and other forms of settlement."

Chervinko says knowledge of the carvings date back to the 1880s. Back, then there was no lake. It was privately owned farm land.聽

A father and son took the panels, and in the 1930's loaned them to the 九游体育 Illinois University museum.聽

Following World War II, the son was stationed in Kansas, moved there and brought the petroglyphs with him. There's a gap in time until 2000.聽

The family loaned the panels to the Historic Adobe Museum in Ulysses, Kansas for up to 25 years. In 2003, an Illinoisan came to rediscover the rocks at the museum.聽

In 2007, SIU received a grant to go to Ulysses and study the rocks. Then in 2011, the museum under went repairs, so the petroglyphs went back to the family.

"Enough time apparently passed," Chervinko says. "These rocks were sitting in their garage and they just got tired of them."聽

Last year, the Upper Mississippi Valley Archeology Research Foundation relocated them to Macomb, Illinois.

Since then, Chevrinko has been working with the group to bring them home to southern Illinois. That happened on August 27, 2022.聽

The panels date back to anywhere between 500-1200 A.D.

"They contain the only known bear images carved into rock in Illinois," he explains. "There's a couple of paws. There's some more typical things you see like quartered circles and hand prints. "

Chervinko believes history buffs and art lovers alike will be able to enjoy them.

"The area around where the petroglyphs are like their churches, and these petroglyphs you can almost liken to stained glass," he adds.聽

The hope is for these panels to go on public display in the coming months.
