Weather Academy Demo: How to make frost on a can

CARTERVILLE (WSIL) -- The Weather Academy stopped visiting schools a while ago, but the still have more science to share.

Only 3 items are required for the experiment:

  1. Ice
  2. Table Salt
  3. Metal can

Steps:

  1. Pour ice in can
  2. Pour Salt over ice
    • This will melt the ice and create a really cold salt water solution inside the can. Melting ice takes heat energy away from the environment around it, so the temperature of the solution will dip below freezing.
  3. Wait
    • If you wait long enough, the cold solution inside the can will make the outside of the can cold enough that it begins to form frost.
