The Red Devils are headed to the 4A State Semifinals with a 25-20 win over the Bulldogs.
HARRISBURG, Ill. -- The No. 2 seed Murphysboro traveled to Harrisburg High School on Saturday afternoon to take on the No. 11 Bulldogs in the IHSA Class 4A Quarterfinals. These two teams last met in week seven of the regular season. The Red Devils blanked the Bulldogs 40-0 in that game. Saturday's re-match game was much closer, but MHS came out on top once again, and is headed to the final four.Â
It was a packed house at Taylor Field for the biggest high school football game of the year in our area between two River to River Conference teams, both with hopes of making it to the state semifinals.Â
Final play of the first quarter, scoreless game, Owen Rann rolling out, he gets taken down by a Red Devil defender and the ball comes loose. Zack Naas picks it up for the 48-yard scoop and score. MHS gets on the board first up 7-0. That would be the score at halftime. Â
It did not take the Bulldogs long to even the game up. 20 seconds into the second half, Karmello Downey gets the hand-off and takes it to the house. Game tied at 7.Â
Later on in the third quarter, Gibson Fager, hands it off to Bryson Canaley, he breaks through a pack of Bulldogs and is into the endzone for the touchdown. Extra point is no good. Red Devils lead by 6.Â
But the Bulldogs answer. Next possession, Rann, airing it out to his guy, Tevin Godsey, no one was catching him. The Red Devils blocked the PAT. The game is tied up once again at 13 a piece.Â
Fourth quarter action now, just over three minutes left in the game. Murphy deep in Harrisburg territory, Fager fakes the hand-off and calls his own number, shrugging off Bulldogs on his way into the endzone. Red Devils on top up by six after another missed extra point.Â
49 seconds left in the game, Harrisburg with a chance to win it. Rann directing traffic, he makes the throw of his career � connecting with Aiden Unthank as he backpedals into the endzone. The game tied for the third time.
Trentn Price's extra point is good. Bulldogs with a one-point lead.Â
3.3 seconds left. Red Devils with one last shot at the final four. Fager throwing up the Hail Mary and Josh Cano answers the prayer. He comes down with the last-second touchdown. The Red Devils are headed to the state semifinals with the walk-off touchdown, 25-20 the final score.Â
No. 2 Murphysboro will host the top-seed Rochester in the 4A State Semifinal next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
