CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- The flash flooding brought on by Thursday night's heavy rain has left two roads closed in Carbondale this weekend due to high water.
Safety officials with the City say around 9 p.m., crews from Carbondale's Public Works were out inspecting the Dogwood Road at a stretch that is prone to flooding.
Traffic Control Supervisor Don Snider says about 45 minutes later, as crews were setting up "Road Closed" barricades, they spotted a driver stranded on the roof of her car.
"They were setting the barricade and saw her headlights and then noticed her sitting on top of the car," says Snider, adding that crews acted quickly to rescue the stranded driver.
Water was up to the windshield, inside and out, and Snider says it is possible she might have been stuck there until morning if they did not see.
"If you notice the road now, you can see the other end of the road; at night, you cannot," says Snider. "If she'd tried to get out, and tried to walk to safety, the water as you can see is running pretty steady, she could have been swept away as well."
Snider says this part of Dogwood Road is not uncommon to closures during heavy rains. It, and North Oakland at Charles Road, are expected to remain closed through the weekend due to flooding.
"If you see the signs, if you see the barricades, if you see the people, pay attention," says Snider. "We all like to go home, we like to see you go home too."
Officials say, if there is a road closure sign, don't ignore that; and if there is water on the road, turn around, don't drown.
