JACKSON, MO (WSIL)--An administrative order from the Cape Girardeau County Courthouse extends the suspension of jury trials through Feb. 26.
This comes after increased COVID-19 activity in the area.
The Cape Girardeau County Jail is currently over capacity.
The jail has a maximum capacity of 220 inmates and currently has 237.
However, Sheriff Ruth Ann Dickerson said the challenges are no different than what the rest of the world is facing.
"It's no different than everything else that's going on. Everybody is trying to do their part to maintain and try and reduce the spread of COVID and I think it's just a part of what we're living with in our everyday lives," said Dickerson.
Dickerson also said being over capacity is a problem many jails across the country deal with on a regular basis.
But the sheriff's department is working closely with health departments to keep the virus from spreading.
