(CNN) -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency has had a rocky start to its COVID funeral assistance program.
Within the first month more than 2,500 applications were approved, but the agency still has tens of thousands from people who lost loved ones to the coronavirus.
To apply you have to call FEMA's funeral assistance hotline. More than 5,000 agents are now taking calls.
So far, nearly $18 Million have been distributed. Some $52 Billion was allocated as part of the COVID relief deals in December and March.
The average claim is about $6,800.
