CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- More than a dozen people, some in costumes but all in a masks, joined For Kids' Sake organizers at the LIFE Community Center Saturday to help raise money for children in Bangladesh.
The event marked the kick-off of the Superhero 5K Run/Walk, but this year's event was a little bit different with social distancing guidelines.
The race is virtual and organizers streamed the kick-off on Facebook. That means participants have until October 4th to finish the 3.1 mile race anytime and any place that they would like.
Organizer Ryan Edwards says racers can log their times online and provide updates of their progress on social media.
"You know we weren't sure how it would go with the virtual edition, but we're really really pleased with the results," explains Edwards, Race Director for Kids' Sake. "Of course people miss gathering together in person, but overwhelmingly we've heard positive feedback."
Edwards says people have been able to invite their families no mater where they live, turning into "virtual reunions of sorts, all in support of the kids in Bangladesh."
Funding will be used to help children in Bangladesh by helping to provide food, water and other basic needs.
Those who want to sign-up for the Superhero 5K can do so . The last day to register is October 4th, which is also the last day to complete the race.
