CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- October is domestic violence awareness month and October 6th marked the Carbondale Women's Center's first event: the Clothesline Project.
The Clothesline Project is a non-governmental organization created to bring awareness to the issue of violence against women men and children.
For those who have been affected by violence, it is a means of expressing their emotions by decorating a t-shirt.
The Women's Center decided to keep holding events during the pandemic to show support for those in domestic violence situations.
"Even though they may not be able to leave right now, and they may not be able to get in person for services, that our organization and their community is still here to support them and understands what their experiencing and wants to do whatever we can to assist," said the Domestic Violence Program Coordinator Andrea Stephens.
The Women's Center serves eight counties in southern Illinois.
On average, their Domestic Violence division helps 5,000 people per year, close to 2,000 of which are children.
