CARTERVILLE, IL (WSIL) -- Dozens were in downtown Carterville for the city's Art Show and Stroll Saturday afternoon as more than 25 artists showed off their works.

Suzann Starchild Shepard, who organized the event, wanted to hold it last year for her 80th birthday but COVID put a stop to that. She says happy to now celebrate her 81st with the event she hopes becomes a new tradition, adding that "art is good for the soul."

"I think art uplifts our spirit, and I think it's so important that we have a way to uplift our spirit," says Shepard. "We spend hundreds going to the ball games, the concerts; let's spend hundreds on art because we have that forever and that calms our heart and makes us happy."

Money raised from Shepard's art work went to Strong Survivors, an organization that helps people battling cancer and their caregivers. She says it's dear to her, as a cancer survivor herself.
