CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (WSIL) -- The river walk in Cape Girardeau took on a whole new look Thursday night.
"3,2,1, flip the switch!"
The City of Cape Girardeau and Old Town Cape, a group that works to revitalize the downtown, cleaned and lit the Mississippi River Tales murals on the floodwall.
The 24 LED lights were installed not only for beautification purposes, but also for safety.
Board President of Old Town Cape, Danny Essner said they are ecstatic this project is done. "We didn't know if would ever happen, we were about to give up and finally its coming to fruition. We almost had to pinch ourselves to believe that it is really happening," said Essner
The cleaning and illuminating of the panels actually started 12 years ago.
Recent advances in lighting technology made the upgrade more practical and affordable.
