CARBONDALE, Ill (WSIL) -- SIU's 'Challenge to Excellence' Camp certainly had a blast Thursday. Campers spent the week building and decorating model rockets. They also learned about the science and industry of space travel. Thursday morning they launched those rockets. They tell News 3 they really like the creativity and challenges of using problem-solving skills.
"I just like to learn things. Rockets are interesting for a lot of people, I'm definitely one of them. I definitely like the commercial vs government aspect, the compare and contrast things we've done. It didn't go terribly well. My rocket went up, but the recovery band snapped and my capsule is somewhere in the trees. But I got the rocket down." said Madi Herzog, Challenge to Excellence Camper.
Campers also had classes in math, science and astronomy. This is the 36th year of the Challenge to Excellence program.
