HAMILTON CO. (WSIL) -- After weeks of training, Julie Drew took a big step in what she calls the right direction Thursday.
"A child needs somebody to represent them, someone that they feel safe with, and in some situations, some kids are thrown from one person to another," explains Drew.
Thursday afternoon, Drew became the first volunteer for CASA of Hamilton County.
"They don't just tell you, 'Here is your case and go.' They're going to help you so you're not left all on your own."
Mariah Hayes, executive director of CASA in Franklin and Hamilton counties, says the program advocates for children who have experienced abuse and neglect.
"There is definitely an increase every year. Especially in the past two years, things have really grown."
Hamilton County State Attorney Justin Hood says the service can make a big difference.
"Sometimes the attorneys are limited in what they do when there's parents involved and they have attorneys. It's another set of eyes and years for the court and be able to figure out what's going on with these children," said Hood.
