CHARLESTON, MO (WSIL) The Charleston Department of Public Safety started the new year with a homicide investigation after an early morning shooting left one man dead.
"Anybody that's going to shoot anyone is dangerous, said Charleston police Chief Robert Hearnes. “We would like to get these people off the street"
According to Hearnes, at about 4 a.m. on January 1, dispatch received a call that a person was shot at the 500 block of Ada Street. When officers arrived, they found a man with several gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The man killed is identified as 20-year-old Malik Jones of Caruthersville, MO. Because of that, Chief Hearnes says his department has contacted several other agencies to assist in the investigation.
As of January 3, at 1:15 p.m., a suspect is still not in custody.
CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Police are looking for a suspect after one person was shot and killed on Monday.
“Missouri State Highway Patrol and The Mississippi County Sheriff's Office are assisting with the investigation, Hearnes explained.
Hearnes says he is hoping anyone with information will come forward to help.
"Somebody may have some pertinent information then it's important we get justice for the family that someone calls us with the information, he said. “We can't do it by ourselves.

"It's been a while since we've had a homicide and I'd like to get it solved as quickly as possible, said Hearnes.

"I want the public to know we're going to do our best to find out who's responsible, Hearnes said.
Hearnes also says your tip might be what puts certain pieces of the puzzle together to help solve the case.
“Any information that might help with something we already know, or put the pieces together, he said. “We can figure out if it's important. If you have some information or know something, give us a call.
