RANDOLPH COUNTY (WSIL) -- A Labor Day weekend turned tragic for one family in Cutler.
On Sunday, police and ambulances responded to a single-vehicle on Valley Steel Road and Moffat Road just east of Sparta.
A 14-year old girl died at the scene. The 15-year old female driver, from Coulterville, was airlifted to a regional hospital with life-threatening injuries. A 5-year old passenger, also from Coulterville, survived.
Resident John Williams was with his family during the holiday weekend, when the day came to a screeching halt.
"It was a pause. There was no time for celebration when you got chaos going like that," Williams said. "A lady came from the other end of the road and said that kids were involved. So we stopped and prayed."
Investigators say the driver lost control on the gravel road, ran into a ditch and flipped the car over. Williams says that road can be dangerous at high speeds.
"If you're going more than 20 miles an hour, you're on ice," Williams said. "That's what we call it, 'ice rock', because it's like being on ice."
Williams has children who are about the same ages as the victims. He hopes the family that lost the teen girl to the accident can overcome a tragic end to the holiday weekend.
"Our prayers go out to the family and with whoever God chooses to allow to get through this," Williams said. "There ain't no room for blame. Life happens. Move on."
