BENTON, Ill. -- A 53-year-old faces multiple charges after he is accused of pushing and kicking law enforcement while in the middle of a highway on Monday.
The Franklin County Sheriff Kyle Bacon said it happened on February 19, when a man was walking in the middle of IL State Highway 34 near Steel City Road just east of Benton.
After callers stated the man wouldn't get out of the road, deputies responded to the scene.Â
A deputy gave verbal commands to the man, which he refused to follow and kept walking towards the deputy, the sheriff said.
The man then allegedly shoved the deputy in the chest. Sheriff Bacon then said the deputy then directed the man to the ground where he was put in handcuffs. At this time, the man is accused of resisting and continued to kick deputies.
The man was identified as Eric S. Sullivan, 53 of Benton, Illinois.
Sullivan was searched after he was placed in custody. The sheriff said a plastic bag with substance inside it, field tested positive for cocaine.
Sullivan was then taken to the Franklin County Jail where he faces charges of aggravated battery to a peace officer, resisting/obstructing a peace officer and possession of a controlled substance.Â
