CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- A Kentucky high school basketball coach is facing charges after a traffic accident in Carbondale.

Wesley Overstreet, 31, of Paducah, is charged with DUI, possession of a controlled substance, and leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

Just before 2 a.m. Saturday, Carbondale Police were called for a reported hit and run crash near the intersection of West Grand and South Illinois Avenue. A vehicle had struck a light pole near the intersection.

Carbondale Police say witnesses followed the vehicle north on South Illinois Avenue and saw it hit a parked car before officers were able stop the vehicle at the intersection of South Illinois and West Cherry Street.

Police say the driver, identified as Overstreet, was impaired and had controlled substances and other narcotics without a prescription.

Overstreet is the boy's head basketball coach at St. Mary school in Paducah. The team was in Carbondale to participate in the Paul Bates Memorial Carbondale Holiday Tournament.

In a statement Monday, the school said it was "addressing this personnel issue internally" and had named assistant coach Chase Denson as interim coach.

A preliminary hearing in the case is set for January 21.

Full statement from St. Mary School System:

Early Saturday morning, St. Mary boys head basketball coach, Wes Overstreet, was charged with suspicion of DUI. No students were involved in this incident. We are addressing this personnel issue internally.

Assistant Coach, Chase Denson, is named interim coach as we handle this matter. Our goal is to make this situation as minimally disruptive to our team as possible so that they may continue to focus on the next games ahead of them.

We ask you join the St. Mary community in praying for Wes and his response to the issue at hand. We know it is through God's grace we are given redemption and the opportunity to renew our lives.
