PADUCAH, Ky. (WSIL) -- A Paducah man has been arrested after police say he shot and killed a special education teacher.

Kelvin Lamont Richardson was caught by officers just a few blocks from a home on Fountain Avenue, where Carrie D. McCord was found shot and killed in her backyard.

Officers responded to the home just before 1:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they found a woman with an apparent gunshot wound and a suspect fleeing the area on a bicycle.

Witnesses provided the description of the suspect, which lead police to Richardson. After a brief chase, he surrendered and officers found a handgun on him.

Richardson told detectives McCord tried to help him adjust to life outside of prison, which he was released from a year ago.

In March, police say Richardson started causing problems for McCord, who filed an Interpersonal Protective Order against him.

Richardson said he obtained a handgun and went to McCord’s home

Tuesday intending to kill her and three neighbors who apparently intervened in an earlier incident.

Police say Richardson confronted McCord, told her to call the neighbors outside, and when she refused he shot her.

Richardson was booked into the McCracken County Jail Tuesday.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday at the Regional Crime Laboratory in

Madisonville, Ky.
