JACKSON CO. (WSIL) -- A Jackson County teacher found a fun way to teach her class about life across the country. Now those students are on a quest to get a small glimpse of all 50 states.
Kacie Lang wanted to get her Elverado social studies class more engaged with geography.
"I've had the privilege of going to many different states throughout my lifetime to connect with them. And also I thought since the kids can't go to those states, why not bring the states to them?" she said.
Lang sent a letter home last week to parents, asking anyone from another state to send postcards.
"We've received 10 postcards from 10 different states. We have multiple different postcards from some states, so all together we have 20 postcards," she said.
The project circulated on social media and became a hit. Monday, the class received an anonymous donation.
"Someone from Amazon, they sent us a pack of 50 state cards and sent a nice little note along saying they wanted to make sure the kids received a card from all 50 states. That generosity is just overwhelming," she said.
Even the school principal is excited.
"We have some students that never get out of southern Illinois, and this is a great way for them to explore other states and other opportunities across the United States," said Connie Clendenin.
Mrs. Lang's class has been keeping up with the postcards with a check list. They're collecting until May to prepare for their map test.
"The kids are going to pick one state to do a report over to learn more about that state," said Lang.
She said the response has been so nice, she'll keep doing the project.
"I would like to try this every year. Maybe keep all the postcards in a photo album so that the kids can compare from on year to the next."
