FERGUSON ELECTION

FERGUSON, MO (CNN) -- Voters in Ferguson, Missouri elected the city's first black mayor.

Returns from the Saint Louis county board of elections show that Ella Jones won with 54% of the vote.

In 2014, Ferguson was the epicenter of racial unrest in the U.S. over the shooting death of Michael Brown.

The unarmed African American teenager was shot by a white police officer, sparking outrage and protests.

Ella Jones is also now the first female mayor of Ferguson.

Her election comes as another series of Black Lives Matter protests are taking place over the killing of George Floyd.

Jones was elected as Ferguson's first African American city council member the year after Michael Brown's death.
