Fighting for Freedom: Carbondale Unites Against Human Trafficking

CARBONDALE, IL (WSIL) â€� Human trafficking is a global issue, but its impact is felt deeply in local communities. This January, as part of Human Trafficking Prevention Month, the Carbondale Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the United Nations Association of the U.S.A. ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois Chapter are partnering to shine a light on this critical issue in ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois.

Join the conversation on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at 7:00 PM at the Carbondale Public Library, where experts and leaders will discuss actionable ways to combat human trafficking. This hybrid event will also offer a virtual attendance option for those unable to join in person.

The evening will feature two distinguished speakers: Professor Shelly Taylor Page, Director of Experiential Learning at ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois University School of Law, will share insights on how human trafficking affects ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois and explore strategies for community awareness and prevention.

Mayor Carolin Harvey, who officially proclaimed January as Human Trafficking Prevention Month in Carbondale, will speak about the city’s ongoing efforts to tackle human trafficking through partnerships, advocacy, and education.

The event will not only raise awareness but also provide attendees with practical tools to identify and prevent trafficking. Participants will leave equipped with the knowledge needed to protect vulnerable populations and take action in their own communities.
