BENTON (WSIL) -- Some in Benton may have been surprised to see the county courthouse still intact Wednesday morning.

Benton resident John Metzger made his way to the town's square to get an update on the county courthouse.

"I had heard that the building was going to be taken down today, so I was just interested in how that's going to look."

When he arrived, he noticed a lack of commotion. "Well, I haven't seen much going on here today. Maybe it'll be tomorrow or maybe later today. I don't know."

"Well, things has not quite moved along as quick as we thought as far as today," said Franklin County Board Chairman Randall Crocker.

According to Crocker, the project is on hold due to an issue concerning protective fencing.

"The fencing we thought would be here today, but now for some reason, they're telling us tomorrow."

Pamela Bennett and her son were out reminiscing and taking pictures of the old courthouse.

"I mean, cause we were here with the Scouts when they had the official closure, and we actually got pictures in front of it, with all the Scouts from Franklin County."

Bennett says the building holds special value to her. "Me and my husband got married in there, so kind of, because we did that before we got married in the church, and so it's kind of sentimental."

But along with the nostalgia, there's anticipation for the future.

"The old one has a lot of history, and the new one's going to be quite a building," noted Metzger.

Crocker says he hopes to see the project continue this week.

"But tomorrow, at least, they will start putting fencing up to protect the public from the demolition, and the demolition will start hopefully on Friday, and be mostly completed next week."

Crocker expects there to be increased traffic on the square due to planned demolition. He asks that drivers use extra caution and pay attention to the road in front of them.
