CARTERVILLE (WSIL) -- According to the National Weather Service, heat is one of the in the United States and is responsible for various

"There's heat stroke, heat exhaustion, there's heat cramps, heat rash and sunburn, for even that matter," says Carrie Eldridge, Director of Emergency Preparedness at the Franklin-Williamson Bi-County Health Department.

Eldridge says when out in the heat it's important to listen to your body's signals. "Some of the first signs of a heat stroke are a very high temperature, dizziness, confusion, and you can even pass out, so a heat stroke is a medical emergency."

During a heat stroke, Eldridge says your body temperature climbs to 103 degrees or higher. "Heat exhaustion has very similar symptoms to your heat stroke, but you can pass out as well, but you won't have that high temperature."

Eldridge says that another difference between a heat stroke and heat exhaustion is sweating. "You won't sweat with your heat stroke, whereas with your heat exhaustion you'll be sweating profusely."

"If you're sweating a lot and you stop sweating, you need to make sure you find a shady spot. If you're working outside, try to find that shady spot, and also it's a good time to have emergency contacts in your phone," adds Orval Rowe, Deputy Coordinator with Jackson County Emergency Management.

Rowe says that there are ways to prevent overheating. "Keep light clothing, have plenty of water, they recommend usually between a quart and a quart and a half an hour, which seems like a lot but you can use other fluids that can help rebuild your system."

While the heat may have you reaching for an ice cold bottle of water, Eldridge says it's best to drink something a bit warmer.

"You're better off drinking a drink that's cool but not hot. That's better for your body to absorb those liquids."

Experts say, if you have to get out, the best time to mow or work in the yard is in the early morning or evening.
