(WSIL) -- News 3 WSIL is proud to join with the Southern Illinois Community Foundation to help local non-profits.

This week we spotlight a new campaign named "Give S.I." It benefits organizations like the Humane Society of Southern Illinois.

They are one of few places for unwanted pets that are often surrendered, dumped, or rescued from bad situations.

"We're the only open access shelter in the community, over a couple different counties actually, and that means we take in every animal that's brought to us. We don't turn anybody away," says Shelter Manager, Julia Hayward.

Among their services is once critical to helping keep pet populations under control.

"We also offer low cost spay and neuter vouchers for the community. That's what the proceeds from Give SI will actually go to this year. It's run off of donations, so there is a small fee for the voucher, and then we match that and pay the vet with that."

They're making operations more affordable for those who need it.

"Because when pets are just left to procreate willy nilly, they, you know, there's no rhyme or reason to it, and it doesn't do anybody any favors, including the pets themselves."

More than 70 organizations will benefit from Give-SI. Those groups serve veterans, the homeless, animals in need, among many other worthy causes.
