(WSIL) Ill. -- Illinois State Senator Darren Bailey (R-Xenia) has thrown his hat into the ring to be the next governor of Illinois in 2022.
Bailey made the announcement Monday (February 22) to a room full of supporters in Effingham.
"After much prayer and fasting, Cindy and I are pleased to announce to you that the decision we have made to seek the nomination of the Republican party, the party of Lincoln, to be your next governor for the State of Illinois," said Bailey.
Bailey told the crowd his decision to run came because he believes Illinois is "in trouble" under the leadership of Governor J.B. Pritzker.
"We've been saying in Springfield for a long time, Illinois does not have a revenue problem, Illinois has a spending problem and it's time we address it," said Bailey.
Bailey joins fellow former Republican state senator Paul Schimpf (R-Waterloo) who announced his run for governor last week.
