CARMI, Ill. -- Authorities are looking into a body that was found in a shed in Carmi Wednesday night.

The White County Coroner Chris Marsh said police got a call about the body just before 7 p.m. on October 4.

Marsh said the body was found in a shed in a wooded area behind the Stewart Street Apartment Complex.

Some kids were running out of the woods when another person asked them what they were doing. That's what led them to find there was a deceased person laying inside the shed, Marsh said.

When asking Marsh about if it was suspicious, he stated police have had calls there before about a squatter in the shed. He also said the body found in there seemed to have been in a sleeping position.

Marsh also said the body was badly decomposed. He guesses the body has probably been there for about two months.

The area was called in as a crime scene to make sure they cover all necessary areas and investigate the situation.

Marsh said he plans on taking the body up to Champaign for an autopsy on Friday. He plans on testing the DNA to determine the identification of the person. He adds this may take some time for results.

Carmi Police Department and the White County Coroner's Office are investigating.
