Explaining the Enhanced Fujita scale for tornadoes

CARTERVILLE, Ill. (WSIL) -- One question you may ask yourself is how tornadoes are measured? It's with the Enhanced Fujita (EF) scale which is gives a tornado a rating based on the damage and estimated wind speeds.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Paducah broke down how many EF-2, EF-3 and EF-4 tornadoes which have occurred in the region from 1996 - 2024.

According to the NWS in Paducah, a total of 130 EF-2 tornadoes hit within their district during the past 28-year span. 33 EF-3 tornadoes hit as well, along with 7 EF-4 tornadoes during this timeframe.

So what's the criteria? Here is a breakdown...

EF-0 (Weak tornado)

  • Winds: 65-85 mph
  • Damage: Minor

EF-1 (Weak tornado)

  • Winds - 86-110 mph
  • Damage: Moderate

EF-2 (Strong tornado)

  • Winds: 111 - 135 mph
  • Damage: Considerable

EF-3 (Strong tornado)

  • Winds: 136-165 mph
  • Damage; Severe

EF-4 (Violent tornado)

  • Winds: 166-200
  • Damage: Devastating

EF-5 (Violent tornado)

  • Winds: 200+ mph
  • Damage: Incredible
