CHRISTOPHER, Ill. -- An elderly man was rescued from a fire which totaled a home in Christopher on Wednesday morning.
Multiple area fire crews were called to a home on fire along West Market Street at around 7 a.m. on July 31.
According to Christopher Mayor Gary Bartolotti, city maintenance workers were working on a sidewalk nearby when they saw the smoke.
"The workers saw the smoke and went in the house. One worker got a man out of bed and another worker also helped the man get out of the house," Bartolotti said.
Bartolotti said the man inside his home was in his late 70s and was sleeping in his bed at the time the fire started.
"They (workers) saved his life and we are very grateful for that," Bartolotti added.
The mayor stated the fire started on the garage side of the home and spread from there.
Most of the roof at the home collapsed due to the flames.
Bartolotti said the home is a total loss.
The cause of the fire is not determined at this time.
