VIENNA, Ill. -- The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) responded to a request from News 3 about an incident at Shawnee Correctional Center on the morning of September 25.
IDOC detailed what they call a health related event on Wednesday morning. They said MABAS Hazmat Team 45 was contacted to assist with the investigation at the Shawnee Correctional Center but did not find any harmful substances during their search.
Details from IDOC of the health related incident at Shawnee Correctional Center are shared below...
- This morning, September 25, a correctional officer reported to the Health Care Unit (HCU) at Shawnee Correctional Center with medical symptoms after conducting count in Housing Unit 1.
- Another correctional officer, assigned to Housing Unit 1’s control room, began to experience medical symptoms and was escorted to the HCU by two additional correctional officers.
- The two responding correctional officers also began to feel ill along with two staff members of the HCU.
- Five of the six impacted staff were decontaminated and transported to an outside hospital by ambulance for evaluation. They have since been released.
- No individuals in custody were impacted.
Shawnee Correctional Center remains on lockdown and no visits are allowed as of 4:37 p.m. on September 25.
