VIENNA, Ill. (WSIL) -- State Senator Dale Fowler issued a statement after reports of exposure incidents at correctional facilities on Wednesday.

Senator Fowler sent out a statement on the afternoon of September 25, after he said he received reports of unknown substance exposures at Shawnee Correctional Center and Vienna Correctional Center on Wednesday morning.

“I have been contacted by numerous concerned constituents regarding this latest potential drug exposure incidents at Shawnee Correctional Center and Vienna Correctional Center. This disturbing pattern highlights the urgent need for stronger safety measures to protect our correctional officers, staff, and inmates. It is imperative that the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) acknowledges the increasing threat posed by these incidents and takes swift, decisive action to address the issue. That’s why I am once again calling on IDOC to temporarily suspend the processing of all non-legal mail until proper safeguards are in place. Every day we delay action is another day our correctional workers and inmates face unnecessary risk. Enough is enough. - Senator Dale Fowler

After six southern Illinois state legislators signed a letter to the Illinois Department of Corrections earlier this week, Senator Fowler responded with an update on Wednesday morning.

“I just received a phone call just a few minutes ago from the Department of Corrections acknowledging the receipt of the letter, and they said they’re working on it and they’ll be back in touch with us as soon as possible," Fowler said. "So, I hope to hear back from them possibly today or tomorrow. If for some reason we don’t, we’re gonna stay on top of this of course.
