Illinois State Police Alerts Public of Toll Phone Scam

Illinois Toll Way Scam

A scam is circulating in Illinois, alerting people on their phones about sending money for unpaid tolls in Illinois.

The Illinois State Police (ISP) alerted the public on Tuesday morning about the phone scam alert.

The scam is detailed as being a text message, alleging those who receive the text owe an unpaid toll balance and sends a link to pay the balance.

ISP states this is not from the Illinois Department of Transportation and if you receive this message to not respond.

Illinois State Police urges the public to consider the following...

1. DO Not respond to a text message or send money to a number you do not know. Scammers can be very aggressive in their techniques. One of their most commonly used techniques is to create a sense of urgency and fear in their potential victims in order to gain their personal information.

2. The area code in the scammers text message is 263 for Montreal, Canada…NOT Illinois.

3. The spelling used in the scammer’s text is INCORRECT. Illinois Tollway IS NOT spelled “Illinois Toll way�.

4. The link in the scammers text message for the Illinois Tollway is also INCORRECT. To be sure of this, you can do a quick Google search for the Illinois Tollway and see that the correct URL to the website is
