One dead, one taken to hospital in apartment complex fire in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) -- Firefighters responded to the scene of a fire at an apartment complex in Carbondale on Wednesday, where one person was pronounced dead and another taken to a hospital.

Firefighters with the Carbondale Fire Department responded to an apartment building in the 300-block of S. Marion Street, at 11:16 a.m. on April 16.

The Carbondale Fire Department stated when they got to the scene, smoke was coming from the first floor of the apartment building. Crews went inside one of the apartment units where they said they found one person.

Authorities later said one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another person was taken to the Carbondale Memorial Hospital where they were treated for smoke inhalation and then released.

The Carbondale Fire Department is investigating, along with other partnering agencies.

"The City of Carbondale and the Carbondale Fire Department share our deepest condolences with the family, friends, and neighbors of the deceased individual," a statement read in a release shared by the city.
