A fogbow was captured on camera in Union County, Illinois, on December 30, 2025.

WARE, Ill. (WSIL) -- A rare weather phenomenon formed in southern Illinois on Monday morning.

A fogbow appeared near Ware in Union County on the morning of December 30.聽

WSIL's Meteorologist Nick Boynton says a fogbow is a rare type of rainbow. Since it鈥檚 formed in fog, the water droplets are much smaller and therefore light is reflected much differently than what you would typically see in a rainbow. Due to this different refraction, the colors are generally muted and usually only faint yellow/blue or red colors can be seen around the edges. Most of the time, all you would see is a pale or white color that is more broad than your typical colorful rainbows. That鈥檚 why they are also referred to as ghost bows!
