CARTERVILLE, Ill. (WSIL) -- Organizations and agencies across southern Illinois are urging everyone to stay off the roads if they can avoid it on Sunday night.

Transportation officials, sheriff's departments, police departments and emergency management agencies are urging motorists to stay off the road as road conditions have become icy due to the winter precipitation.

Freezing rain has also collected on trees which have led to tree branches breaking, along with entire trees coming down in some areas.

The Williamson County Sheriff's Office said they have responded to dozens of motorist assists, downed tress in the roadway, along with other weather related incidents.

Sheriff Jeff Diederich stated, “Until 3pm today we were fortunate to have been lightly affected; that is rapidly changing. We expect conditions to worsen as night falls and temperatures continue to drop causing precipitation to freeze on the roadways.

Road conditions may worsen as overnight temperatures dip.
