CARRIER MILLS, Ill. (WSIL) -- Off-highway vehicle enthusiasts and officials gathered to celebrate the opening of the Sahara Woods State Recreation Area's new trail system in Saline County. This marks the end of a 26-year journey to establish Illinois' first public off-highway vehicle park.

鈥淭his years-in-the-making Sahara Woods project represents what happens when strong government partnerships prioritize local communities,鈥 said Governor JB Pritzker. 鈥淏y repurposing this coal mine site into a new 4,000 square-foot OHV park, we are investing in conservation, tourism, and recreation for the Saline County community. I鈥檓 grateful to our partners at DNR and the hardworking leadership in southern Illinois for their efforts to support economic development in this region.鈥

The trail system was built on land donated by Bankston Creek Collieries and Sahara Coal Co., reclaimed from mining activities conducted from 1936 to 1993. Natalie Phelps Finnie, director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, highlighted the transformation of the site into a unique recreational area.

鈥淲e鈥檙e here today because of the grit and resolve of countless individuals over nearly three decades who were determined to see this concept become a reality,鈥 said Natalie Phelps Finnie, director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, which operates the park. 鈥淎n old coal mine site that once was an economic driver for Saline County has been transformed into a unique recreational site that will once again contribute to the local economy.鈥

The park offers nearly 30 miles of trails and features a new 3,400-square-foot OHV building and a separate restroom facility. The Illinois Capital Development Board led the planning and construction efforts.

鈥淭he project at Sahara Woods is a great example of how thoughtful investment and collaboration can enhance our state parks for future generations,鈥 said CDB Executive Director TJ Edwards. 鈥淭he new infrastructure and improved trails will expand access to outdoor recreation in one of the most dynamic regions of the state.鈥

State Sen. Dale Fowler of Harrisburg praised the project for diversifying outdoor recreational opportunities in southern Illinois.

鈥淭his has been a long time coming, and I鈥檓 proud to see this partnership with IDNR and our shared vision for Sahara Woods finally coming to life,鈥 Fowler said. 鈥淭his off-highway vehicle project represents years of persistence, planning, and investment that will provide lasting benefits for outdoor recreation, tourism and economic growth right here in southern Illinois.鈥

The Village of Carrier Mills has been actively supplying water for a local project. Numerous constituency groups have provided valuable input and assistance over the years as well. These groups include ABATE of Illinois, the Illinois Federation for Outdoor Resources, and the American Motorcycle Association.

The trails will operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Monday until late January 2026, with a daily vehicle limit. One-day permits cost $20, and four-day permits are $65. More information is available online.
