Sewage spill, sewer spill

JOHNSTON CITY, Ill. (WSIL) -- Environmental officials are investigating a sewer overflow in Johnston City which impacted a creek on Wednesday.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stated they had staff on site in Johnston City on November 13, where they said a valve on a force main failed. The Illinois EPA said the failed valve caused a significant sanitary sewer overflow in the area of 9th Street and Market Avenue.

The Illinois EPA also said impacts from the overflow were identified in the Lake Creek as well.

The mayor in Johnston City also tells News 3 about the matter. The mayor stated the mechanical failure led to the leak which impacted the ditch. Crews flushed water through the area to dilute it. The mayor added everything is back to normal now and the EPA was on scene to help get the standards up.

The Illinois EPA stated the investigation is ongoing and they will be determining the appropriate next steps to address the impacts.
