HARRISBURG, Ill. -- Local state and community leaders came together to mark the completion of the second phase of construction of the Harrisburg skatepark on Friday.

The event celebrated the completion with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

“The Harrisburg skatepark has brought a number of positive benefits to our local community, said State Senator Dale Fowler. “Not only has this skatepark provided a safe space for skateboarders, scooters, and bikers to practice and enjoy their sport, but it also promotes a great form of physical activity practicing balance and coordination.

Senator Fowler helped secure funding for this second phase of the project through a $50,000 member initiative grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

“We want to thank Senator Fowler for his work in helping us secure this grant to further bring our vision of this skatepark to life, said Harrisburg Township Park District Executive Director Blake Emery. “With this funding, we were able to finish bringing in new skate equipment and fixtures while adding lighting to our facility, which will offer people longer hours to enjoy the park.

Phase one of the skatepark was completed in August of 202 and was funded locally by a general obligation bond.

“These types of grants are extremely valuable to our local communities, and I am glad to have been able to play a part in helping see this project through, concluded Senator Fowler.
