Lockdown reported at Illinois Capitol building

The Illinois State Capitol is pictured in Springfield. On Tuesday, Oct. 24, lawmakers will return to the Statehouse for the first of a two-week fall veto session.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. —�Due to a reported threat on March 12, authorities initiated a lockdown at the Illinois Capitol Building, prompting a police sweep of the premises.

At 2:08 p.m., the Illinois Freeport Caucus's X, formerly Twitter, account posted, "We are on lockdown at the State Capitol and have been ordered to shelter in place." 

At 2:16 p.m., Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias's X  account also posted a notice of a threat involving the Illinois Capitol Building, located at 401 South 2nd Street in Springfield.

The post reads, "Out of an abundance of caution, the Illinois Secretary of State Police issued a lockdown order and are currently conducting a sweep of the building."
